Week 4 Blog #4: It's Just My Destiny!

It's Just My Destiny!

I do not agree with the chapter entitled "Being The Board" written by Roz and Ben Zander. In this chapter, they claim that the idea of being the board is the idea of claiming that "we are responsible for everything that happens in our lives." I disagree with this statement in that there are things that are out of our control. Yes, life is a risk, but that does not make us responsible or liable for things that happen to us that are out of our control.

I believe in destiny, fate, and God. I believe that our life is pre-planned, and I do not believe that we are responsible for everything that happens to us. We are not at fault for every bad thing that happens to us, and in turn, do not need to evaluate and improve upon ourselves when we did nothing wrong. This is being hard on yourself, and taking blame where there is none to be taken. To me, this sounds like the thinking of a anal, over-bearing critical person who is lacking in self-confidence, and is so much of a perfectionist that they look for things to try and fix that are not even within their control.

  1. Interesting reaction to the idea of being the board. As i've written elsewhere, I'm usually more concerned because women I've know have the tendency of taking responsibility of too many things (whereas most men to quite the opposite). The idea behind the chapter isn't to over-analyze or try to exercise mind-boggling control, but to get rid of the blame-game so that one is free to take what happens in life and find constructive ways to make things better while letting go of the rest that one has no control over.

Some people stay in that area of life when something happened to them because they want someone else to take responsibility for their part that happened. This is entirely reasonable but also not helpful because it can make one into a victim. The Zanders take is that, as adults, we take chances in everything we do, so we need to sign off on that and move on. As someone who believes in Divine providence, than you can do the same thing, knowing that there is some ultimate design behind what transpires in your life. Being the board means that you own your life (in your case with a really powerful Co-pilot).
